Elon Musk announced Monday his artificial intelligence (AI) project will be made available as open-source software. His xAI is to come up with its own chatbot called Grok and anyone can use it and modify it. It is similar to what we have seen with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The decision of Tesla CEO comes from his recent concern about the direction of AI development. About two months ago, he expressed discomfort about advancing Tesla’s AI and robotics capabilities without having significant control over the company’s decisions.

Elon Musk has been usually vocal about his views on the ethical use of AI. He shares his concern about misuse of the tool. Lately, he even filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, and accused the company of straying from their initial goal of developing AI for the betterment of humanity. He showed discomfort towards just making profit from the AI development.

Computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman lately said in one of his podcast interviews that late last year Musk appreciated the idea of open-source AI.

He added further that Musk’s startup xAI introduced Grok to a limited number of users last November. Thereafter, a month later Grok was made available for Premium+ subscribers of X (formerly Twitter) social media platform. Musk then had described Grok as a tool for seeking maximum truth through AI technology.
